The bible is full of moments that make me reconsider and reconstruct my life. But one of the most significant, lies in the life of King Solomon, King David's son. At this part of Solomon's life The Lord is so pleased with his obedience and how faithful he's been that he asks Solomon a question,"What do you want? Ask and I will give it to you?" The creator of the universe, of everything that has ever existed, that made the earth, created gravity, designed the human brain, molded man from dirt and breathed life into him, just asked man, his creation to ask for literally anything and he would do it... What would you do? Today's blog is based on 1 kings chapter 3.
Verse 6:
Solomon replied, “You showed great and faithful love to your servant my father, David, because he was honest and true and faithful to you. And you have continued to show this great and faithful love to him today by giving him a son to sit on his throne."
The first thing he does, is honor his father, he acknowledges his elders. He acknowledges his past and thanks God for enjoying the fruit of King David's labor.
7“Now, O Lord my God, you have made me king instead of my father, David, but I am like a little child who doesn’t know his way around.
Then, he submits his weakness to God. He was aware of his vulnerabilities. Solomon knew that he didn't know. This part makes him all the more ready, because he knows he isn't.
8 And here I am in the midst of your own chosen people, a nation so great and numerous they cannot be counted!
9 Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?”
And instead of riches, power, fame, the lives of his enemies, or material things...he asks for wisdom. Wisdom?! He asks for a wise heart to discern between right and wrong. And it actually pleased God!
10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for wisdom.
11 So God replied, “Because you have asked for wisdom in governing my people with justice and have not asked for a long life or wealth or the death of your enemies—
12 I will give you what you asked for! I will give you a wise and understanding heart such as no one else has had or ever will have!
13 And I will also give you what you did not ask for—riches and fame! No other king in all the world will be compared to you for the rest of your life!
14 And if you follow me and obey my decrees and my commands as your father, David, did, I will give you a long life.”
Solomon wanted wisdom more than anything. And this pleased God. God was pleased because Solomon's focus was on purpose, on purpose. (read that again)
Because his focus was on serving the Lord, God gave him favor. He knew Solomon's heart was centered around serving God and that proved He could trust Solomon.
But the crazier part of this story is that because God knew Solomon was content with what God had given him. He blessed him with more.
God gave him favor, and blessed him with what he didn't ask for. Riches and honor. When he was pursuing purpose possessions came to him.
Where was Solomon's heart? With God.
Where were his desires? With God.
What was he focused on? On God.
When our lives are fixed on our God given purpose the lord will honor us, does this mean God will give us all the exact favor he gave Solomon? No. But what it does mean is he will provide for us in every season, we will not go without, our needs will be met. He is Jireh, our provider. Rapha our healer, Shalom our peace.
